Morris College will hold groundbreaking ceremonies for the new residence hall, Twin Towers, and the Student Health and Wellness Center on Tuesday, January 10, 2012.
Program participants include Mayor Joseph McElveen of Sumter, Eugene Baten, chairperson, Sumter County Council, Dr. Solomon Jackson, Jr., donor, Dr. Charles Pee, the college?s minister, Dr. W.E. Givens, chairperson of the Morris College Board of Trustees, and Dr. James Blassingame, First-Vice President at Large of the Baptist E & M Convention of SC and secretary of the Morris College Board of Trustees.
The groundbreaking for the Twin Towers will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the east end of Dobbins-Keith-Whitener Hall. Ceremonies for the Student Health and Wellness Center are scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. west of Daniels Dining Hall.
The Twin Towers Residence Hall will stand at three stories. Equipped with 43,500 square feet, it will be designed to accommodate 74 male and 74 female students in separate towers. This project is being funded from the $10 million gift from Dr. Solomon Jackson, Jr.
The Student Health and Wellness Center will be equipped with 8,153 square feet. It will house offices and classrooms for Health Sciences and Recreation Administration, the college?s Army ROTC program, and a fitness area.? The fitness area will include a weight room, aerobics room, lockers, and showers. The construction of this project is funded by several sources: the Health Resources and Services Administration under the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Education, Title III funds, the South Carolina Higher Education Excellence Enhancement Program, and Dr. Solomon Jackson, Jr.
