'Gossip Girl,' other CW shows coming to Hulu (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Current-season shows on The CW including "The Vampire Diaries" and "Gossip Girl" are coming to Hulu.

The five-year deal announced Friday means that before the end of the year, the online video service will feature shows from five of the largest six broadcasters ? ABC, NBC, Fox, The CW, and Univision. The only holdout is CBS.

Under the new deal, subscribers who pay $8 a month for Hulu Plus will get the five most recent episodes from The CW's lineup the day after they are broadcast on television. The same episodes will then be available for free on CWTV.com three days after broadcast. Eight days after broadcast, the episodes will be available on the free version of Hulu for computers.

All the versions will come with ads. But episodes on Hulu and Hulu Plus have about half the regular ad load of television, or about two or three ads per break. CWTV.com will host shows that have the same number as on television, or about four per break.

The deal is the latest move by Hulu to bulk up on its library of content since its owners ? The Walt Disney Co., News Corp., Comcast Corp. and Providence Equity Partners ? decided not to sell it earlier this month.

Hulu's senior vice president of content, Andy Forsell, said the offering will resonate with The CW's tech savvy audience, which is focused on young women aged 18-34.

"Their audience is obviously a generation that is really comfortable online," he said. "They're very comfortable going back and forth."

The CW sees the move as a way to capture new licensing revenue, but also bring viewers back to watching the debut broadcast on television.

"They can actually help drive viewers back to the network and the local stations that are airing our shows," said Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW.

Putting shows on the free version Hulu eight days after the initial broadcast is not unusual. Fox imposed the delay on its shows starting in August, although it allows day-after access to subscribers of certain pay TV subscribers.

Earlier this month, The CW also agreed to make all its previous seasons' shows available to subscribers of Netflix Inc.'s streaming plan, which also costs $8 a month. Those episodes come without ads.

The CW is co-owned by CBS Corp. and Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros.

The nation's weather (AP)

An early season winter storm will continue to pummel the Northeast on Sunday as it moves northeastward and exits the region by Sunday evening.

The strong storm will continue drawing Atlantic Ocean moisture while cool air from Canada filters in behind the system, triggering snow showers across New England and into Nova Scotia by evening.

Heaviest snowfall is anticipated early Sunday from Vermont to Maine with snowfall rates up to 2 inches per hour possible, especially at higher elevations. Snowfall accumulation will be significantly less than Saturday, with most areas seeing 2 to 5 inches of snow. However, higher elevations may see up to 8 inches Sunday.

Behind this system, high pressure will quickly build across the Eastern half of the nation, bringing drier conditions. The Plains and Mississippi River Valley will start to warm up as flow from the south returns. Expect the Southern Plains, Lower Mississippi River Valley, and Tennessee Valley to return to the mid-60s, but the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states will remain in the 40s.

In the Midwest, a low pressure trough and associated frontal boundary continue moving eastward from the Northern Plains through the Great Lakes. This system will trigger a few light and scattered rain showers as it moves through the Midwest throughout the day.

Out West, another cold front moves into British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. This will bring more rain showers to Oregon and Washington, with high elevation snow showers in the Cascades. Temperatures in the lower 48 states ranged Saturday from a morning low of 10 degrees at Mt. Washington, N.H., to a high of 87 degrees at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

LightSquared partners with PCTEL on antenna 'fix' for GPS interference issue

It's the problem that won't go away for LightSquared, and one that has prompted a number of different "fixes" and "solutions." The latest, as announced by the LTE wholesaler last month, is an actual hardware fix that overcomes the interference issue affecting high-precision GPS units -- the only problem being that all existing and future units will need to be upgraded with said fix. Now the company's back with yet more details, announcing that it's partnered with PCTEL to develop an antenna that lets users of high-precision GPS units easily retrofit their devices to make them "LightSquared-compatible." There's still no word on the cost for it, but LightSquared has also announced that Partron America has created a filtering component that costs $6. The company's press release is after the break.

Put On Your 'Fright' Suit: Astronauts Set for Halloween in Space (SPACE.com)

Three astronauts aboard the International Space Station are gearing up to celebrate Halloween in orbit, even though visitors and treats for the orbiting outpost will arrive too late for the fun holiday.

"There is a bag of some of the personal items up here that crews have brought up in the past,"?space station commander Mike Fossum ?of NASA said during an in-flight interview with SPACE.com Oct. 19. "Right on the top are the Christmas-kind of items. I'm going to look underneath that and see if we have some masks or something we can have a little fun with that day."?

Fossum, Satoshi Furukawa of Japan and Sergei Volkov of Russia will oversee the arrival of a robotic cargo ship packed full of food and supplies, but it won't reach them until Nov. 2. The Russian Progress 45 freighter will launch from the Baikonour Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan Sunday (Oct. 30), the day before Halloween.?[Haunting Photos: The Spookiest Nebulas in Space]

Fossum, Furukawa and Volkov have been living and working on the massive orbiting complex since June. They expect to return to Earth Nov. 21, though not before sharing the station with three new Expedition 29 crew members for almost a week.

NASA astronaut Dan Burbank and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin are slated to launch from the Baikonour Cosmodrome Nov. 13 and dock at the orbiting outpost two days later.

The six-person team of astronauts and scientists had been living in the Aquarius Underwater Laboratory, about 3? miles off Key Largo, Fla., and 60 feet (18 meters) below the surface, since Oct. 20. The ?"aquanauts" were forced to return to the surface before the completion of their 13-day research mission.Another group of astronauts was set to celebrate Halloween in very different surroundings, at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, until their mission was aborted Wednesday (Oct. 26) due to safety concerns from Hurricane Rina.

NASA's Shannon Walker, Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques, Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi, planetary scientist Steve Squyres and two veteran divers, James Talacek and Nate Bender of the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, were taking part in the 15th expedition of NASA's Extreme Environment Mission Operations, or NEEMO.

The mission was the first to test concepts for how to explore an asteroid and perform science experiments on its surface. The aquanauts experimented with different ways to maneuver on a mock asteroid landscape that was built on the ocean floor.

Before their mission was cut short, the aquanauts were in a festive mood and joked about their Halloween plans with SPACE.com during an interview Monday (Oct. 24) from the Aquarius habitat.

"I hope we get trick-or-treaters," Walker said. "We have candy."

China to curb 'overly entertaining' reality TV (AP)

BEIJING ? China plans to limit reality TV shows and other light entertainment fare shown on satellite television stations as part of a drive to wrest back Communist Party control over cultural industries that are fueling more independent viewpoints.

The order from the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, known as SARFT, refers to shows that are vulgar or "overly entertaining." It singles out programs dealing with marital troubles and matchmaking, talent shows, game shows, variety shows, talk shows and reality programming.

Such shows must be largely phased out by the beginning of next year by the country's 34 satellite TV stations, to be replaced with news and cultural programming. The order also bans viewership surveys and the use of ratings as the sole criteria for whether to broadcast a particular show.

The changes aim to "meet the public's demand for varied, multilevel, and high quality viewing," said the order, published Wednesday.

"Satellite channels are mainly for the broadcast of news propaganda and should expand the proportion of news, economic, cultural, science and education, children's, and documentary programming," the order said.

The order follows a Communist Party meeting last week that asserted the need for strengthening social morality and boosting China's cultural influence abroad ? a recognition by the party that it is losing its power to dictate public opinion. Social media, especially hugely popular microblogs that encourage individuals to generate content, are also being targeted by government censors.

The crackdown coincides with a bout of national hand-wringing over a lack of public ethics, highlighted by the death last week of a toddler who was struck by a vehicle and left for dead by passers by. Officials believe the promotion of "core socialist values" ? a phrase meant to counter calls by liberal Chinese for "universal values" ? will bolster social cohesion in the face of rising materialism.

The communique that emerged from last week's meeting called on officials to "focus education and improvement in the ethical field where there are particularly serious problems."

"Resolutely oppose money worship, hedonism, and extreme individualism and arduously correct bad tendencies such as abusing one's powers, fakery, unprincipled acts, and harming others for profit," said the document, published Wednesday on government websites.

It said television programs and other cultural products should be "refined and inspiring," while oversight of the Internet must be strengthened to block pornography, vulgarity, and the "transmission of harmful information."

In a sign authorities intend to pursue online infractions, three people have been punished with warnings or up to 15 days in detention for spreading rumors online, while suspects were being sought in another three cases, the official Xinhua News Agency said Wednesday.

According to the SARFT regulation, satellite channels as a whole can show no more than nine of the restricted programs each night between the prime time hours of 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with individual channels limited to two programs each not exceeding 90 minutes in total.

They must also show at least two hours of news programs between 6:00 a.m. and 11:30 p.m., with at least two news programs running no less than 30 minutes each to be shown in prime time.

While satellite television has grown massively as an alternative to the staid government-run terrestrial channels, younger Chinese have increasingly turned to the Internet for viewing domestic and foreign produced movies and television programs. Government efforts to police the Web have focused mainly on blocking pornography, gambling sites, and those featuring politically sensitive content, while moves to restrict entertainment have been largely ineffective.

The new rules emerge from an ongoing push for media to be both politically docile and relevant to a Chinese audience, according to David Bandurski, editor of the China Media Project website at the University of Hong Kong. Heavy restrictions on content may ultimately doom that to failure, he said.

"They can't have it both ways. That is the real conflict. This is not really about culture at all, it's about politics," Bandurski said.

The new restrictions also contain a strong commercial element in that they stand to favor central government broadcaster CCTV, which has been struggling for viewers despite its monopoly on nationwide terrestrial television. Authorities last month had already ordered leading competitor Hunan Satellite to suspend broadcasts of the hugely popular "American Idol" type singing contest "Super Girl," allegedly for running overtime.

The restrictions had been expected for some time and media reports said stations were already tailoring their programming to conform. Most were already cutting contest shows in which viewers vote for their favorite contestant, a concept frowned on by party cadres who don't permit competitive elections or other facets of Western-style democracy.

The producer of a popular dating program on Shanghai satellite station Dragon TV called "Pick One From a Hundred" referred questions on programming to station managers who did not answer their phones.

"I'm OK with the new rule. The authorities have their reasons for issuing it and we just need to go along," Shao Zhiyu said.

With Viacom?s purchase of Bellator, the future looks bright

With Viacom?s purchase of Bellator, the future looks brightMedia conglomerate Viacom, the company that owns both Spike TV and MTV, has jumped into the MMA game with the purchase of Bellator Fighting championships. USA Today reports that Viacom now has a majority stake in Bellator, and their fights will start airing on Spike in 2013, moving from MTV2.

Spike had a longtime relationship with the UFC, beginning with "The Ultimate Fighter" in 2005. That will end this December when the 14th season of "The Ultimate Fighter" comes to a close, and the UFC jumps to Fox networks. Spike will have rights to the UFC library until the end of 2012. When that agreement ends, Spike will have Bellator and its tournament-based fights in place.

Bellator began airing preliminary fights on Spike's website earlier this year, and CEO Bjorn Rebney told Cagewriter in a previous interview that he was excited to work with Spike because they already understand MMA.

"We're a great position in that our deal is with MTV networks, so it's that larger corporate umbrella. They control Spike, MTV, MTV2. You never know what the future will bring. The foreseeable future will be what it is, which is MTV2 and Spike.com for the prelims, but Spike is better than anyone in this space. They get it better than anyone."

This is nothing but good news for fans. It ensures that Bellator will be viable for years to come, giving fans more choices for MMA. With the UFC on Fox networks and Bellator with Viacom, there will be a greater volume of fights. Though the move to Spike is more than a year away, it will also give fans the option to watch in HD, a choice that doesn't exist with MTV2.

Court rules Huffington Post lawsuit to go to trial (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? Did Arianna Huffington and Ken Lerer steal the idea for the Huffington Post?

Though Huffington has deemed the allegation "ridiculous," a judge thinks that a lawsuit making that claim is serious enough to go to trial, per a ruling in a New York court Wednesday.

Peter Daou and James Boyce, two former political advisers, filed suit against the HuffPost co-founders last November claiming that they took their idea for a liberal-leaning news site. Since then, Huffington and Lerer have tried to have the case thrown out, but to no avail.

The judge ruled Wednesday that the case would go to trial.

Daou and Boyce were involved in the early discussions about the now-sprawling media empire, but just how involved they were is unclear.

The Huffington Post launched in May 2005, meaning it has now been more than six years since the founding and even more since the discussions took place.

The timing on this may seem odd to some -- the site has been successful for some time -- but the judge thinks this case deserves a trial.

Given how many people are targeting the HuffPost, that may not be a good thing.

Libya "liberated" but Gaddafi still unburied (Reuters)

MISRATA, Libya (Reuters) ? A day after Libyans declared a "liberation" that consigned Muammar Gaddafi to the "garbage bin of history," hundreds again filed past his rotting corpse in a grim display that has raised questions about the nation's new direction.

With their Western allies expressing quiet unease that Gaddafi was battered and shot after his capture on Thursday, then put on show for days in a market cold store, the rebel factions which ended his 42-year rule were still wrangling over the body, amid wider negotiations on dividing up power.

The killing of the 69-year-old in his hometown of Sirte ended a nervous, two-month hiatus since the motley rebel forces of the National Transitional Council overran the capital Tripoli and ended eight months of war -- though Gaddafi's son and heir-apparent Saif al-Islam is still at large.

The death of the fallen strongman allowed the NTC to trigger mass rejoicing by declaring Libya's long-awaited "liberation" on Sunday in Benghazi, the seat of the revolt. But it has also turned a harsh spotlight on a lack of control from the center over disparate armed groups and on jockeying for power among local commanders as negotiations begin in earnest to form an interim government that can run free elections.

"Leaders from different regions, cities, want to negotiate over everything -- posts in government, budgets for cities, dissolving militias," said one senior NTC official in Tripoli, though he defended this as a healthy expression of freedom.

"Is that not democracy?" he asked. "It would be unusual if they did not after Muammar favored only a few places for 40 years. There is no reason why it cannot be peaceful."

In Misrata, Libya's long-besieged third city whose war leaders are pushing for a big role in the peace, fighters handing out surgical masks against the stench were still ushering hundreds of sightseers into the chill room where the bodies of Gaddafi, his son Mo'tassim and his former army chief lay on the floor, their flesh darkening and leaking fluids.

BURIAL DELAY

Officials at one point declared the show was over, closed the gates and started turning people away. "That's enough," said one of the guards, "He's been causing us as much trouble dead as he did alive." But, within an hour, there was a change of plan as dozens more sightseers arrived and were shown in.

Nonetheless, the attempt to discourage more visitors may indicate progress on reaching a deal to bury the bodies.

The Islamic law that NTC chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil said during Sunday's liberation announcement should be upheld in the new Libya would dictate a swift burial within the day.

But NTC officials said negotiations were going on with Gaddafi's tribal kinsmen from Sirte and within the interim leadership over where and how to dispose of the bodies, and on what the Misratans might receive in return for cooperation.

The killings near Sirte, after cellphone video footage was taken showing the captive Gaddafi being beaten and mocked by fighters apparently from Misrata, are also a matter of controversy -- at least outside Libya. The United Nations human rights arm has joined the Gaddafi family in seeking an inquiry.

Abdel Jalil told a news conference on Monday that the NTC had formed a committee to investigate. He also indicated that the interim authorities still held to an official line that Gaddafi may have been killed in "crossfire" with his own men, a view many NTC officials themselves seem ready to discount.

"Gaddafi was killed during the clashes with his supporters while arresting him," Abdel Jalil said, adding that whoever killed him may have had something to hide.

"Those who have an interest in killing him before prosecuting him are those who had an active role with him," said Abdel Jalil, who like many of the new leadership formerly held positions of authority under Gaddafi.

Adding to concerns about Libya turning over a new leaf on respect for individuals, New York-based Human Rights Watch called on the NTC to probe an "apparent mass execution" of 53 people, apparently Gaddafi supporters, whom it found dead, some with their hands bound, at a hotel in Sirte.

FEW QUALMS

Few Libyans seem troubled about either how Gaddafi and his entourage were killed or why they are being exposed for so long in what seemed a grim parody of the lying in state often reserved for national leaders.

"God made the pharaoh as an example to the others," said Salem Shaka, who was viewing the bodies in Misrata on Monday. "If he had been a good man, we would have buried him.

"But he chose this destiny for himself."

The killing of fallen autocrats is far from a novelty. In Europe in living memory, similar fates befell Nicolae Ceausescu in Romania in 1989 and Benito Mussolini, who had created modern Libya as an Italian colony a decade before he died in 1945.

However, some of the anti-Gaddafi rebels' Western allies have expressed disquiet about the treatment of Gaddafi after his capture and after his death and worry Libya's new leaders will not uphold their promise to respect human rights.

"They were not pleasant images," said British Prime Minister David Cameron, an early supporter of the rebellion.

"Everyone understands that is not what should have happened. It should have ended in a trial and should have ended in Gaddafi facing justice," Cameron told parliament in London.

In France, the other main driving force in NATO backing for the rebels, the foreign ministry was asked at a news briefing if there was concern about the future of democracy in Libya. An official noted that Abdel Jalil had spoken of "moderate" Islam:

"We are confident in the Libyan people, who have courageously set themselves free of 42 years of dictatorship, to construct a state of law, conforming to the principles and universal values shared by the international community," the ministry said. "We will be vigilant about human rights."

As their Tunisian and Egyptian neighbors whose uprisings inspired Libyans to rebel held or contemplated free elections, fellow Arabs also voiced distaste at Gaddafi's treatment, even though sympathy for the fallen strongman was in short supply.

"Forty-two dark years under a merciless dictator has naturally left the Libyan people very damaged," said Mahmoud Nofal, a 36-year-old bank employee in Cairo. "It has driven them mad for revenge. The rotting body is just emblematic of the rotten political and social environment under Gaddafi."

The NTC wants the bodies buried in a secret location to prevent the grave becoming a shrine for Gaddafi loyalists. But authorities in Misrata do not want them under their soil.

Argentine president sweeps to re-election win (Reuters)

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) ? Argentina's fiery center-leftist president, Cristina Fernandez, swept to a landslide re-election victory on Sunday, crowning a comeback that seemed unthinkable for much of her turbulent first term.

With votes counted from 75 percent of polling stations, Fernandez had 53 percent support, 36 percentage points ahead of her nearest rival, socialist candidate Hermes Binner.

No Argentine leader has won such a big share of the vote since General Juan Domingo Peron was elected for the third time with 62 percent in 1973, and tens of thousands of jubilant Fernandez supporters celebrated.

Fireworks, flags bearing the image of Peron's famous wife Evita and Peronist songs filled the square in front of the pink presidential palace in Buenos Aires.

"If any one of us had said this was possible two years ago, they would have told us we were crazy," a tearful and ebullient Fernandez, 58, told cheering fans. "You can count on me to go further with this project to improve the lives of 40 million Argentines."

The scale of Fernandez's victory gives her a strong mandate to deepen the unconventional economic policies that play well with voters but irritate investors and farmers.

Generous social spending to expand pensions coverage and child welfare benefits have won her a loyal base of voters.

"We need this victory for wealth to be shared more fairly," said Sofia Belastegui, 42, a teacher who joined crowds of supporters waving blue-and-white flags, letting off fireworks and chanting Peronist party anthems.

Sunday's result marks a dramatic change of fortunes for a leader who some critics once said might have to leave power early as angry protests by farmers and middle-class voters battered her approval ratings soon after she took office.

When her husband and predecessor as president, Nestor Kirchner, died a year ago, many thought it spelled the end of the couple's idiosyncratic blend of state intervention, nationalist rhetoric and the championing of human rights.

Instead, it prompted a wave of nostalgia for the best years of Kirchner's 2003-2007 presidency and sympathy for a woman who suddenly seemed more likable.

A skilled orator fond of glamorous clothes and make-up, Fernandez still wears black as she mourns her husband and closest advisor. His image featured heavily in her campaign.

A splintered opposition and brisk economic growth helped Fernandez turn the sympathy vote into solid support.

Despite double-digit inflation and other signs of strain as global conditions worsen, Argentina's economy is growing at about 8 percent a year and the country has regained some of its glory as the "breadbasket of the world" as grains shipments rise. Unemployment is at a 20-year low.

Voters with memories of the hyperinflation of the late 1980s and a severe economic crisis 10 years ago have good reason to think things could be worse than they are today.

"Crises come and go here and instability is exhausting because you make plans and they keep going to waste," said Marta Rey, 50, a teacher who voted for Fernandez's Peronist party for the first time on Sunday. "It gives me a certain security for my son and for the future."

HEAVY-HANDED

Fernandez's easy re-election belies fierce opposition, however, to her combative, heavy-handed style -- typical of the Peronist party that has dominated politics for decades.

"It's a complete mess ... the corruption, the inflation, lies, authoritarianism. We've got used to living like this," said Juan Tofalo, 43, a newspaper vendor in Buenos Aires.

Allegations of corruption have stalked the government for years, although there have been no convictions.

A recent crackdown on economists whose inflation estimates double the official rate of a discredited state statistics agency is typical of Fernandez's controversial methods, who some critics say resemble those of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez.

Businesses are routinely strong-armed into price control agreements -- her main weapon against surging prices -- and deals to increase their exports as the trade surplus dwindles.

When a leading newspaper and cable news channel owned by the Grupo Clarin conglomerate criticized her handling of farmer protests, Fernandez hit back. The company was stripped of a key operating license and "Clarin Lies" posters appeared across the capital.

In 2008, at the height of the global financial crisis, Fernandez stunned financial markets by nationalizing private pensions. A year later, she fired the head of the central bank when he refused to hand over foreign reserves to pay debt.

Such measures, coupled with high inflation and lax monetary and fiscal policy are dimly viewed on Wall Street, where economists say Latin America's third-biggest economy could be heading for a hard landing as global conditions sour.

Few analysts think Fernandez will change course unless forced to by a sharp slowdown in neighboring powerhouse Brazil or lower prices for Argentina's key exports of corn and soy.

Fernandez has outlined few concrete policy proposals, vowing only to "deepen the model." That will be easier if, as early results indicated, she regains the congressional control she lost at mid-term elections in 2009.

"There's no clear opposition leader with this result," said Fabian Perechodnik, an analyst at the Poliarquia polling firm. "Today marks the start of a period in which the president will be the one and only protagonist." (AP) ? For once, Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers got to play with a lead instead of trying to erase another late-game deficit. That left the rookie to celebrate with fans instead of suffering through another frustrating loss.

Newton ran for a touchdown and threw for another in the second half to help the Carolina Panthers beat the Washington Redskins 33-20 on Sunday.

Jonathan Stewart also ran for a third-quarter touchdown for the Panthers (2-5), who for the first time all year found themselves playing with the lead almost the entire way.

Newton threw for 256 yards and ran for 59 more. He ran for his seventh touchdown on a 16-yard keeper in the third quarter, tying a record for most TDs rushing by a rookie quarterback since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.

In the fourth, he had an easy touchdown toss to Brandon LaFell that blew the game open.

Washington's John Beck threw for 279 yards and scored on a short keeper in his first start in four years. But he didn't get the Redskins (3-3) back to the end zone again until they were down 30-13.

The past month had followed a familiar pattern for Newton and the Panthers: trail late in close games only and repeatedly fall short. Probably the worst moment came here two weeks ago, when the Panthers gave up the go-ahead touchdown to Drew Brees and the Saints with 50 seconds left in a loss that left Newton growing more frustrated by the day.

But this time, Newton got the chance to keep the pressure on the Redskins instead of trying to pull off his own desperate comeback. The No. 1 overall draft pick responded to that challenge, coolly leading Carolina to three straight touchdown drives after entering the second half with a 9-6 lead.

He completed 18 of 23 passes in an efficient performance, with Steve Smith hauling in seven for 143 yards. More importantly, Newton didn't commit a turnover after throwing three interceptions in last week's loss at Atlanta.

It was clear how much Newton enjoyed finally getting his second win. When it was over, he ran to the front row of fans and gave high-fives on his way to the locker-room tunnel.

After Beck answered Newton's TD run with one of his own, Newton twice found Smith downfield on a 10-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Stewart's 2-yard touchdown that pushed the lead to 23-13.

Then, after the Panthers forced a three-and-out, Newton found Smith downfield again with a perfectly thrown deep ball that Smith hauled in at the 1 for a 36-yard gain. Three plays later, Newton connected with LaFell to make it 30-13 with 8:13 left.

As for Beck, he earned the starting job after Rex Grossman threw four interceptions in last week's ugly home loss to Philadelphia. It was his first start since December 2007 with the Miami Dolphins ? and he remains winless in all five career starts.

He completed 22 of 37 passes and threw a late touchdown to Fred Davis after the game was out of reach.

It didn't help that Beck lost top receiver Santana Moss and tailback Tim Hightower to injuries, either.

Moss hurt his left hand in the first half and spent the rest of the half watching from the sideline while wearing a bulky wrap on the hand.

Hightower ? who got the start and had run for 88 yards on 17 carries ? hurt his left knee on a 4-yard carry in the third quarter. He was helped off the field and eventually carted to the locker room from the sideline. Neither player returned.

Selena Gomez Goes Gangster In MTV EMA Promo

'People know who the eff I is,' the show's host raps in a video for next month's MTV Europe Music Awards.
By James Montgomery

Selena Gomez

When Selena Gomez served as MTV News' special correspondent at the Video Music Awards Pre-Show in August, she was polite, professional and, as far as we can tell, did not utter a single profanity (she did get kissed by her boyfriend, Justin Bieber, though).

But in preparation for her hosting duties at next month's MTV EMA, she's decided to change things up a bit, ditching that good-girl image and going hard. At least judging by a brand-new promo for the show, that is.

Gomez ties on a bandana and throws on a flannel (only top button buttoned, of course) in the new spot, which spoofs her squeaky-clean image and features the demure actress/singer spitting some (sorta-profane) rhymes. It opens with her in full-blown princess regalia, sitting before a vanity and proclaiming to her reflection "Finally, I get to host the EMAs ... wow!"

All of sudden, her thugged-out alter ego appears on the other side of the mirror, tells Selena to "shut her face," and then launches into a few bars, rapping, "Who else better than me to be hosting the show/ People know who the eff I is/ I'm a pro/ The right time and place for me to be/ Yeah, I'll say it/ Congratulations to me!"

Gangster Gomez (or, as she puts it, "The S-E-L-E-N-A to the Gomez"), then gets all Kanye confessional on the mic, rapping that "Sh--'s crazy growing up in this industry/ I was still a baby when I hustled up into the scene" and then drops what sounds very much like a solid F-bomb too. Like we said, she goes hard.

Of course, the whole thing is a joke -- according to a message at the beginning of the spot, "Some of the Selenas in this video are fictional. Any similarities to the actual Selena are purely coincidental" -- but, as MTV's Buzzworthy blog points out, her hip-hop makeover does present a rather unique opportunity for Gomez: Now, perhaps she can drop a mixtape with Shawty Mane, a.k.a. Bieber's rapping alter ego. We'd totally cop that.

The MTV EMA will premiere on Tr3s: MTV, Música y Más at 6 p.m. ET on November 6 and noon on mtvU on November 7. American and Canadian audiences can vote for the North American nominee for the Worldwide Act award, who will represent the continent at the EMA against contenders from across the globe.

Revenge of the Electric Car's Chris Paine on the EV Revival

Tesla cars featured in Revenge of the Electric Car.

October 19, 2011 3:30 PM Text Size: A . A . A Q

What caused you to revisit the topic of electric vehicles, and so soon? Who Killed the Electric Car? came out in 2006, and you couldn?t have expected to turn around and make another movie right away.

AI did not expect to do that at all. It certainly shocked me how fast the car companies turned around on this issue and started developing these programs. We started talking about it right after the first film came out because Bob Lutz announced that GM might start working on the Volt. Rumors started going around, but I started actually filming at the end of 2007. The principle photography was during 2008, 2009, and 2010. Q

What did you hope to achieve with this film?

AThe first film was about how the system can really stop innovation sometimes, but the second film gave us the opportunity to talk about how innovation can start from the inside, and how people working in the system can improve things. And I thought, well, how often will I as a filmmaker have the opportunity to tell two sides of the same story? That was the issue movie; this is a movie about momentum. We shot over three years, and we were under pretty strict?well, extremely strict?agreement not to release the footage until 2011 because we had one company going bankrupt, two having IPOs, and then Nissan, which is traditionally extremely secretive in a way that was not easy to get access. Q

So Bob Lutz had made the announcement about the Chevy Volt, but what made you choose Carlos Ghosn, Elon Musk, and Greg "Gadget" Abbott as the other main characters?

AWe decided that the four characters that we chose represented different pieces of the American puzzle of entrepreneurship. One, of course, was the do-it-yourselfer. Bob Lutz represented Detroit?like old-guard Detroit?who had a change of heart. Elon was Silicon Valley and the well-financed start-up company that came in from the outside. And Carlos Ghosn represented the super-multinational corporation as the head of Renault out of France and Nissan in Japan.

Q

And you also already knew about the production of the Nissan Leaf ahead of time?

AWell, no. We?d heard rumors, but that was the most secret car, and Carlos Ghosn was the last to enter the story in a big way. In fact, we had already filmed for at least a year, maybe not quite that long, when Nissan gave us clearance to come to Japan. And boy, they certainly?like everybody?were quite concerned. Because, you know, our first film was not exactly a love letter to the car industry. Q

Who Killed The Electric Car? definitely was not a love letter. So what did it take for you to convince these people to give you such unprecedented access?

AI knew Gadget as a neighbor, so that wasn?t so much an issue, but I think Carlos, Bob, and Eli made personal decisions and had enough power within their companies that they would trust us to do this. The agreement was that we could publish nothing before 2011, but they had zero editorial control. Q

What did you find to be the most surprising after spending so much time behind the scenes?

AIt made me realize how difficult it is to create change from within. These guys are fighting and arguing with their own companies to innovate and create change from the inside. And then there?s also a lot of external pressure. So I think we all tend to think of big multinational corporations as being monolithic, and what the process of doing this film made me see was that there are different business units and ideas that are struggling within companies to take hold, for whatever reason. Q

You mention in the movie that you couldn?t tell if Bob Lutz was merely playing a role. How genuine do you feel he was being, especially with his belief in the Volt?

ABob Lutz believes in the electric car, if not for any environmental reason, for the idea that GM needed to reinvent itself out of a really lackluster product line in the ?80s and ?90s; the Volt would help reinvent GM from the inside and allow the electrification of the vehicle over the next 20 years because oil prices are going nowhere but up in the long run, and they didn?t want to be last place on that. Q

You also follow Elon Musk through the pangs of trying to turn a profit with Tesla Motors and the Roadster. There?s a funny scene in the movie regarding your own Roadster that I won?t give away, but are you happy with its performance?

AI?ve had that car for almost three years now. And I waited for it for almost two years. And boy, I was having my doubts that they were going to pull this off at various points.

But I?ve had the car for thee years now, and it?s been a terrific car. It?s great to drive; it?s held up.

Q

Well, we?ll see if Tesla actually turns a profit soon by discontinuing the Roadster and introducing the more affordable Model S. The Musk story line also highlights just how hard it is to produce cars if you?re not a huge corporation. It seems that if there?s a niche to attempt, it?s definitely with electric vehicles.

AYeah, why start a car company that isn?t electric? But we wanted to make the point in the movie with the allusions to Preston Tucker that it?s really been difficult to start car companies. And it?s amazing that Tesla has gotten as far as they?ve gotten. And I think they just might make it. Q

Do you own any other electric vehicles?

AYes, I traded in my Prius and bought a Volt, and my girlfriend drives the Nissan Leaf. And we had to pay full price for every one of those cars. And it?s great that there is a federal tax credit for these cars to encourage people to try them. I think that?s sort of the moral of the story for me in all of this: No matter how many arguments people make for electric cars, no one is convinced until they drive one. Q

You interviewed Popular Mechanics automotive editor Larry Webster in the movie, and he speaks a bit about the range anxiety that GM often cites. This taps into a larger issue, that the freedom of the road is a very American notion. Do you think Americans will be able to get past range anxiety?

ARange anxiety, I think, in some ways is one of those problems that we didn?t know existed, but GM decided to really go after that as being important. So their car, the Volt, does away with that problem all together because the thing switches to gasoline after 40, 50 miles, and so you can never run out of power in that car unless you don?t have gasoline. And for people who have had experience driving electrics, I think they understand like I have that it?s certainly not your long-haul car yet, but it?s perfect for people as their primary car to use around town.

The freedom argument is the most metaphysically interesting thing, and I would argue it like this: I think that the idea of being an American and having a certain kind of mobile freedom is almost inherent in the American ideal?the open road and getting away?but that?s been taken ever since energy started coming mainly from foreign countries. The EV still might not have the range people want in the version 2.0 that we?re moving into right now, but it does offer a sort of deeper freedom in that you can make your own energy and power your own transportation just like we could when we had horses and you could feed them in your backyard. It?s a powerful paradigm.

Q

GM just announced the Chevy Spark as its first all-electric vehicle since the EV1. The demise of the EV1 is the focal point of your first film, and GM ends up looking like a bit of a villain. Do you think GM wishes they had kept the EV program together so they would be at the forefront of the technology today?

AFrom an engineering point of view, they lost a competitive edge. Now the Volt, because they?re first to market with a plug-in hybrid, gives them a new edge, and that might add up to something. I know they haven?t hit their sales target in the first six months here, but if oil prices start to trend up again and they figure out how to market the Spark, they?re going to do very well. Q

There are a lot of hybrids on the roads, several EVs, and lots more concepts of both. At the end of Who Killed the Electric Car? you pass judgment on various parties (big oil, big auto, consumers, etc.) as to whether they played a part in killing the electric car. If electric vehicles don?t take off this time around, who would you say is the guilty party?

AI don?t think the oil industry is going to get directly involved, but indirectly, there is going to be a lot of misinformation about things. I don?t like blaming people, and part of the reason I made this new film is to talk about what it takes to move ahead, and we can all be a part of moving ahead by being early adopters and getting this thing going.
