Fire that destroyed Tulsa church ruled accidental

A furnace in the Cornerstone Free Will Baptist Church, 4928 E. Latimer St., caught the building's southeast corner on fire after a motor in the furnace malfunctioned, said public information officer Stan May with the Tulsa Fire Department in a news release.

Crews were called to the fire at about 10:15 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters observed heavy smoke from both ends of the 60-year-old building's attic, May said.

The blaze took 12 fire crews more than an hour to contain, he said.

The building was unoccupied at the time and no one was injured in the fire.

Christmas services were to be held at the church's Family Life Center, adjacent to the church building, on Sunday.
