A simple sentence put a swift end to the plans of bringing horse diving back to the legendary Steel Pier attraction in Atlantic City.
?Steel Pier is dropping its plans to bring back the legendary diving horse attraction? wrote the Facebook page for the family amusement attraction.
Anthony Catanoso, family member of the Steel Pier ownership told the Associated Press ?We just felt that since Atlantic City is moving forward, we should move forward with it,? he said ?We should create new memories for visitors instead of recreating old ones.?
Horse Diving is a spectator event where a horse and rider leap off of a 40-60 foot tower, plunging head first into a shallow pool of water ten to twelve feet deep. Horse diving was decried as unnecessarily cruel and dangerous by animal welfare organizations since the very first show in the late 1800?s.
The Steel Pier Association was planning a $100 million dollar improvement to the Steel Pier over the next three years which will be featuring, according to their February 4th, 2012 press release, ?new thrill-seeking rides; a new food court and arcade area; a nightclub, museum and retail entertainment space; and a 2000-seat ballroom. Also featured will be an amphitheater with acrobatic acts as well as the iconic diving horse act.?
The Steel Pier Association is continuing with their plans to improve the Steel Pier, but without the horse diving act.
Horse Plus Humane Society spoke out to commend the Catanoso family and the Steel Pier Association for deciding to do what they believe is the right thing and not bring back horse diving. Horse Plus Humane Society is the largest humane society in the world dedicated to horse welfare issues, and has spoken strongly against horse diving.
Tawnee Preisner, vice president of Horse Plus Humane Society, gave an exclusive statement to Pet Pardons regarding the decision:
I am delighted that the Steel Pier has decided not to bring this attraction back to life. Horses will not have to endure the high jumps and noisy crowds as they plummet head first into a shallow pool. There is no reason that anyone should want to want make a horse jump from 40 feet in the air. I am glad that they will be looking into alternative attractions; attractions that will not involve exploiting animals. ?Amusement parks should be where people go to have fun with their families, and no animals or people should perform at the detriment of their health or well being.
Now that the Steel Pier has canceled their plans, I for one hope to visit one day. If they had brought back horse diving I would have never visited the Steel Pier. I would urge anyone who reads this article to visit their Facebook page and thank them. They need to know that they made the right decision and it will benefit them financially.
